To prepare

for both parts of the theory test we recommend that all pupils regardless of experience, use the resource material available!

The multiple choice part is delivered using a touch screen computer and hazard perception part records your responses through the use of a computer mouse button.

If you pass one part and fail the other you'll fail the whole test, and you'll need to take both parts again.

The questions in each multiple choice test vary according to the category of vehicle your hoping to obtain a licence for.

For the hazard perception test there are no separate versions for different vehicles ,the items are drawn from the same pool, and each vehicle category the same test. However the pass mark is different for different categories of tests.

Time allowed is 57min

Pass mark is 43 out of 50

To achieve a high score you'll need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five.

You won't be able to view your answers to the hazard perception test as on the road, you'll only have one chance to respond  to the developing hazard.

1.Your photo signed Provisional Driving Licence

2.Your Theory Pass certificate.

The test is straight forward and has been designed to see if you:

: can drive safely

: use your highway code knowledge and demonstrate this through your driving.

You will be asked to sign a declaration and if you want anyone to come with you on your driving test? e.g. your driving instructor! If not would you like hior her there at the end for your brief? (result )

You will make your way outside and your test will start with a basic eye test (e.g.reading a typical number plate) after which you will be asked a Tell Me Question  either inside the car or inside the engine bay?

You will be asked a show me question during the test while our driving?

When in the car the examiner will tell you the test will last approximately 38/40 minutes and will include only one maneouvre and possibly the emergency stop and will now include 20 minutes of independant driving by either of the following:

- following traffic signs

- satalite navigation

Examiners instruction

You will be taken on a range of typical roads and traffic conditions, he/she will ask you to follow the road ahead unless road markings or traffic signs tell you otherwise and he/she will tell you in good time when to turn left or right.

(if you are unsure or did not hear them then ask, they will repeat their direction)

The manouvre is chosen from either:

: pulling over on the right

: Reverse parking  parallel park

: Bay park forward left or right of your choice or reverse     left or right of your choice, examiner decides forward or reverse

They are looking for a overall safe standard of driving.

You can make upto 15 minor faults and still pass your test, 16 or more faults will result in failure. If you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail your test. If at any time the examiner feels that you are a danger to other road users then they can stop the test.

The examiner will ask you to switch off the engine and will refer to the test sheet for the test result. In the event of your instructor sitting in on test then he/she will ask if you want them presant on your result. If you have passed then he/she will request if you want him to apply for your full licence?, which should be in the post in about 20 days, in the meantime you are allowed to drive using the pass details the examiner gives you. If you are unsuccessfull then the examiner will give you a brief explaining what the faults were on your test and why you failed which we find very usefull so we always recommend you listen.

Driving lessons are all about routines and remembering patterns of behaviour. Procedures that have to be followed again and again, after a while these patterns become a habit without you ever realising. But if the patterns are not right then they become BAD HABITS!

When your ready be self critical about your driving, ask yourself "can i drive without the help of my instructor"? Thats what your trying to achieve.
